Character Name: Gundam Tanaka
Canon: Super Dangan Ronpa 2
Canon Point: The Surprise House. Not saying which chapter this happens in for spoiler conscious reasons, but I'll talk about it in his personality section below.

Background/History: Super Dangan Ronpa 2 (game spoilers) This link gives a plot synopsis.

Okay so Dangan Ronpa is a series that focuses on students who attended Hope's Peak Academy, a really prestigious school for kids with special talents. All the kids in the game have a super high school level title, meaning (or at least, supposed to mean) that they are the best of the best in that talent.

The premise of both the first and second games is that a class of these special students is trapped by some Mastermind represented by a robotic bear who is forcing them to participate in a game of mutual killing. Anyone who kills a fellow student and gets away with it is allowed to leave. Monobear provides special motives to drive the students to killing, and when there is a murder, the students investigate it and have a trial to find the culprit. If they guess right, the culprit is executed; if they guessed wrong, all the other students would be killed and the culprit would go free. The games focus on solving these murders but also on learning the identity of the mastermind and stopping the game.

Gundam Tanaka is a character in the second game, which takes place on a school field trip on an island. Gundam's talent is that he's a SHSL Animal Breeder. He raises and tames animals, mostly domestic ones like dogs/cats/bunnies/chickens and especially hamsters. There really is not very much known about his personal history, since he doesn't bother to share much of it and most of what he does share is filtered through his very weird take on reality. I'll talk a little more about this in his personality section.

Personality:

Because a lot of people are following Oren's translation, which is not very far into this game, instead of the translation I've been using, I'm going to leave some of this section behind a link for spoilers. I will be talking about information that has not come up yet in Oren's LP in his personality section, but all big plot relevant spoiler information will be behind the link.

Non-Spoiler Personality

Gundam is written as just a giant walking shonen cliche. Everything about him from his design to the weird way he talks to his name to the way he describes his abilities and history give off the vibe of a mysterious (and morally ambiguous) magical character who would not be out of place in an anime but who stands out as very very weird even among the quirky Dangan Ronpa cast. This is very intentional and not just as an homage - it's gradually made clear that Gundam has very intentionally styled himself this way. For example, his heterochromia is due to a red contact lens that he wears, and a terrible beast he claims to have fought turns out to have been a Pomeranian. He sometimes uses catchphrases from other series in his dialogue, and he named his hamsters after shonen magazines and talks about them as Dark Gods of Destruction even though they are just really well-trained hamsters.

Although he very frequently talks about his magical adventures, his life actually seems fairly mundane. He has apparently saved several species from extinction and is rumored to talk to animals, but he seems to spend most of his time raising domestic animals and updating his website (an animal blog with a secret hidden wizard blog only a chosen few are able to see, which probably means no one but him reads it). There are times he'll make reference to more mundane things from his past, such as going to an amusement park, his mother's bad cooking, or hiding in the nurses' office to avoid the other kids, but will disguise the story with a comment about an amusement park in hell, deadly poison, or secret child demon summoning rituals. At one point, he refers to taming 'Cerebus, the roc, and dragons' when he is actually referring to dogs, birds, and lizards. All of this just shows that, rather than the badass anime wizard he seems to be, Gundam is really just a kind of awkward, nerdy guy who talks himself up as something he really isn't.

That being said, Gundam's persona can't really be called fake, because there doesn't seem to be any conscious attempt at artifice. It's not exactly obvious if he's really this delusional or if this is just the only way he understands how to explain himself and talk to others (I think it's a little of both with a little attention seeking awkwardness thrown in), but he believes his own persona and does not think he's lying or exaggerating when he adds magical or fantastic elements to his descriptions. For example, he actually seems offended when people think the Four Dark Gods are mere hamsters, but the only time he gives real descriptions of their fearsome powers, he doesn't make anything up but just talks about how hamsters eat their own kin and will fight for territory, both of which are true about hamsters but sound a lot more fearsome and deadly the way he describes it. Even though he does sometimes embellish with details he can't possibly think are true, (at one point, for example, he claims to "hunt men"), if Gundam really was consciously lying he would definitely try to make the Dark Gods seem more powerful. Instead he just shows that he has a very bizarre filter through which he views the world, and although he might sometimes intentionally make things up to seem impressive, he also thinks claiming he hunts men and tames dragons are the kinds of white lies people will believe.

The way Gundam presents himself and the way he views himself (though not exactly who he really is) is somewhere between villain and anti-hero. He's mysterious, powerful, and not human; later he reveals that he believes he's the son of an angel and a demon. He has tamed creatures of great power and knows magic spells. He is hateful towards humans and looks down on them as unworthy of his presence, though he can respect those who can present a challenge to him. He plans to take over the world, and his name is spoken with dread in arcane circles. Still, even though he is villainous and demonic, he lives by his own code of honor. He would never act cowardly or back down from a challenge.

None of this is really how he comes off to others - instead he just seems kind of insane. For a lot of the game, especially early on, he's sort of off in his own bizarre little world, claiming he's going to tame Monobear and smoke a cigar over his corpse or spending the entire time everyone else is solving a murder looking for an earring because the world will end if he doesn't find it. He seems disconnected from reality to a degree that he isn't even focusing on the actually terrifying and horrible things happening around them. On the other hand, he shows that there's more going on beneath the surface - when Sonia compliments his hamsters, he drops the persona because he's flattered to the point of being completely flustered. He seems to agree that they are really cute and cuteness is an important quality in animals despite acting like they're demon lords. He also shows that he does want to be included in the group - at one point, he follows the protagonist out with another character insisting on three different occasions that he knows they have plans but doesn't want to be asked to come because he prefers solitude. Even though he thinks he's being taken at face value, it's obvious to everyone that he just wants to be included but won't ask.

The truth is that Gundam is an awkward and lonely person. Although he thinks he's successfully hidden his desire for companionship, he's actually pretty pathetically obvious about how much he wants to make friends. The problem is, for reasons that are never really specifically explored, he's very afraid of rejection and betrayal. In one of his free time events, he expresses that part of why he loves animals is that "anything that speaks will betray you," and when Hinata says he won't betray him, he's extremely pleased but also disbelieving. He constantly asks Hinata why he dares to approach him, and gradually this stops seeming like posturing and more disbelief that someone would be interested in trying to get to know him. He also seems to have issues with touch, claiming he avoids touching people because he is poison due to eating his mother's bad cooking as a child; he's always careful to pull away or back up when anyone approaches him.

Gundam also reveals a side that is incredibly gentle and caring, especially when it comes to animals. Hinata remarks at one point that he becomes visibly warmer and seems more truthful when talking about them. Even though he claims his SHSL talent is a front for his dark magic activities, he's very very passionate when it comes to taking care of animals. His favorite food is pumpkin seeds because he can feed his hamsters with them, and he's able to talk at great length about different hamster species and how with the right breeding, incredible color combinations are possible.

His technique with animals, though, is really just based in kindness and compassion for them. When he reveals his actual methods, he isn't capable of talking to animals exactly. What he does is put them at ease (he tells Hinata he has a magic chant to calm animals that goes "Shh, it's all right, you're okay, it's okay"), and once they know he isn't a threat, learns about them and whether they like being handled or what they like and dislike. His empathy with animals and ability to communicate his own benign intentions is strong enough that it's like he's speaking to them directly.

He is very passionate about protecting animals, and sees protecting them as an important duty he has. When he expresses disappointment that there are no new animals to tame on the island, Hinata suggests the cows in the petting zoo, but Gundam says he isn't interested in livestock. His reason isn't that he dislikes them or thinks they aren't cute, but that he knows livestock were born to be killed for food, and the knowledge that their lives are like that and he can't do anything to help them is too painful for him. He's also constantly expressing worry and anxiety about whether his animals at home are safe and who would take care of his hamsters if something happened to him. In one of his free times, when he teaches Hinata about the hamsters and how to take care of them, it seems like he's hoping to discover someone he considers capable of caring for them if he's gone.

Spoiler Personality

Here. This contains spoilers for his final free time event and plot events up through the end of the game. Sorry to link, I just don't want to post major spoilers on this page.

Abilities/Powers: He has no magical/supernatural powers, although he claims to have whatever kind of bullshit powers you can think of making up. He's apparently a decent enough fighter, but nothing special.

His only actual ability is with animals. He's regarded as a prodigy with them, and is so good at handling them that people think he can talk to them. His hamsters are trained well enough that they not only understand very specific commands he gives, but are conscious of things happening around them (or at least able to understand Gundam's own emotions) and are able to find things he's looking for, like secret passageways, and alert him to them.

The hamsters are:

"Steel Red Elephant" Maga-G : Fierce little guy with a torn ear.
"Star Destroyer Grey Fox" Sun-D: Happy girl hamster with the brownish red spots.
"Invading Black Dragon" Cham-P: Big fat hamster.
"Mirage Silver Falcon" Jum-P: Sleepy hamster.

Items/Weapons: 1. His four hamsters! 2. Hamster care taking essentials. Cage/exercise ball/sunflower seeds/bedding 3. Spell books! They are actually just the kind of cheesy stuff you'd buy at an occult store but he believes they are real.

Sample Entry: Here are a few threads from a previous game: 1, 2, 3, 4

Sample Entry Two: It was, at last, the arrival of the foul day foretold in prophesy, the day the true fury of the Dark Gods of Destruction would awake, as one, and seek vengeance on a doomed and pestilent land. Creatures kin to the mighty hamster tribes, those possessing fine and fluffy coats, may suffice to remain self-sufficient in the art of grooming, yet on occasion even these powerful beings become inundated by refuse too intractable for even their artful tongues. Bedding, food residue, the viscera of vanquished foes, and other such inevitabilities of life encrust in the fur of the tiny deities, rendering it limp and lifeless. Gundam Tanaka was accustomed to such inevitabilities, and has grown to learn the proper handling to clean one of the dark ones in holy water simply to wash away the accumulations of unspeakable debris.

Yet on this day, a more dire situation presented itself. Cleverly escaping from their captive bonds in the safety of their cage, the Four Dark Gods found themselves getting into the kitchen and becoming covered in sticky food. Traditional methods of cleaning would fail in the face of the fruits of their conquest. This grim predicament meant no less than that all four would require a bath at once. Knowing any attempts to protect his body against the fury of these beasts when submerged in water would be futile, Tanaka forewent rubber gloves, as they would only anger the beasts. He carried them to the sink, where he cast a soothing chant to attempt to battle their savagery, and then scrubbed at them with a washcloth inoculated against demonic energy.

Silent Jum-P fell fastest, succumbing to the scrubbing, lulled to sleep by the chant. He knew resistance against the inevitable would be as foolish as casting his odds against the Fates themselves. Sun-D put up minimal fight. She nipped at Tanaka's hands, drawing blood as a warning, but then looked upon Jum-P's surrender and knew the face of futility. The fury of Maga-G, however, could not be quelled. Sensing weakness upon Tanaka's pause to rinse blood from his thumb, he leapt from the battlefield and scurried into the gap between sink and wall.

"Maga-G, you dishonor yourself and your kin," Tanaka muttered, clenching his shampoo covered fists. "If you seek to challenge me, then return and fight!" Drawing upon arcane knowledge, he lowered himself to the chosen lair of the dark creature, and extended his palm to convey a sacrifice to the Gods: a feast of sunflower seeds. Powerless in the face of the sacrificial spell, Maga-G was lured into the palm and to the fate he sought to refuse, the inevitability of the washcloth.

At last, nearly all the Gods had fallen…save the dreaded elephant, beast destined to swallow madness: horrible Cham-P! The largest of the Gods, ghastly Cham-P possessed too much pride and girth to flee. He stood fast and twitched his nose in brazen challenge. The accrue of sugar on his fur was formidable; barely a hair of the terrifying mighty beast was clean of it. Yet Tanaka's will could not be swayed. He met Cham-P's audacious stare with his own undaunted glower, and swiped at him in warning. Cham-P recognized the truth of his foe, and raised himself to his hind legs, revealing his massive final form.

"Huhuhuhu…" Tanaka cackled lowly, knowing the beast believed himself victorious, without knowing he had played directly into his own undoing. In a swift motion, he turned on the faucet. With belly bared, the water washed over Cham-P, cleansing him of his filth. Too distracted by the cascade subsuming him, he did not have time to anticipate the arrival of the washcloth.

Now each of the Dark Gods were at last free of grime. Tanaka wrapped around them a towel to restrict their movements and dry them, savoring the taste of victory at last.
